GDS (Global Distribution System) - Everything You Need to Know

global distribution system (GDS) is a computerized network system owned or operated by a company that enables transactions between travel industry service providers, mainly airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and travel agencies.

Important:

  • See who qualifies - not every property will be accepted. The providers will do an assessment on how successful your property is expected to be on the GDS before accepting your application. Note that some will be rejected at this stage.
  • OpenGDS does NOT distribute to the GDS!

Benefits

  1. Presence on a strong corporate travel platform - access and visibility to thousands of travel agents and corporate bookers around the world who are looking to sell hotel rooms either individually or as a package, broadening your sales possibilities.
  2. Integrates with your PMS for real-time inventory updates – a global distribution system can integrate with your Property Management System (PMS) so that the reservation process is fully automated and your availability is updated across other OTAs and your direct bookings site.
  3. More exposure to higher-paying clientele – as part of a GDS hotel booking system, your hotel will be exposed to a more targeted, professional travel community that alternative property types don’t have access to. Still, if you have the budget, you also have the option to participate in paid positioning services to increase your exposure even further.
  4. Increased revenue opportunities – GDS provides several new opportunities to grow hotel revenue, including participation in attractive package deals (hotel, airfare, car rental, etc.), increased return business, and longer stays.

How to Connect

We connect to the GDS via GDS distributors: Hotelnet, RecOnline and Hotusa. This means that they distribute to Sabre, Amadeus and Travelport (previously called Galileo and Wordspan).

Available GDS Distributors

All these platforms will charge a fee but it needs to be checked with them directly as this could vary per property.

GDS Requirements

Requirements vary slightly by provider, however, in order to make the most of the GDS and ensure the property is approved for access, they need to fulfill the below minimum thresholds:

  1. ADR at 150 USD or above
  2. 15 rooms minimum
  3. Preferably hotels at 3* and above. No hostels.
  4. Strong preference for properties that have high business / corporate travel guests. Leisure travel preferred when geared towards luxury travel and/or major destinations where you need a travel agent.
  5. Preference for properties in city centers and also near airports.
