USB Card Reader Overview

By using a USB Card Reader, you will be able to swipe a card when adding the credit card details to a reservation or House Account, so you do not need to manually type all the details. The credit card reader simply pulls data from the magnetic stripe and inputs into myfrontdesk like a keyboard  following a defined pattern.

Things to Know about USB Card Reader

  • You must have a USB Card Reader to use this feature.
    Example:
    Deftun MSR90 USB
  • This feature is currently in Beta stage. Please let us know if it does not work as expected and if you have any suggestions for improvements
  • This feature should not be considered as an in-person transaction. It will simply facilitate the process of entering the credit card details to a reservation. The charge will still be processed by your payment gateway, so this is still considered an electronic (e-commerce) transaction
  • This feature is not available on your booking engine
  • The card reader works based on the keyboard language settings - if the card reader and keyboard are tuned differently, they will not work properly

How to Use

By swiping the card, the name, credit card number and expiration date will be auto-filled. All the other fields will need to be inputted manually.

Adding a card when creating a new reservation

On your myfrontdesk account:

  1. Start the process to create a new reservation (from calendar or dashboard).
  2. On the Payments step, choose Credit Card under Payment Type drop-down menu.
  3. Make sure that the option 'Enter and store credit card details' is selected.
  4. Swipe the card on your USB Card Reader and then enter any other required fields to continue.
  5. Click on 'Confirm Reservation' to proceed.

Now you can perform transactions with this card!

Adding a card to an existing reservation

Open the specific reservation:

  1. Click on Credit Cards tab
  2. Click on '+ Add Card'
  3. Swipe the card on your USB Card Reader
    There is no need to select a field
  4. Enter any other required fields
  5. Click Save to store the card

Now you can perform transactions with this card!

You can also perform the same steps on your House Accounts when adding a payment.
